Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site
Corner Brisbane and Campbell Street, Hobart
A school excursion not to be missed! The Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site is a nationally significant Hobart CBD property that provides learners with a contemporary educational experience. When your students visit this historic precinct we will challenge their preconceived notions of human rights, and justice and in so doing stir them into considering what kind of world they want to live in. Learning programs cater for students from Year 5 through to Learning programs for student from Year 5 through to tertiary groups .
The Old Courtroom
The penal Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site links with the past and has been used over the years as convict and prisoner barracks. To meet the needs of changing administrative demands the building has been used as law courts, Criminal Courts and as Supreme Courts until 1975 as well as Magistrate’s and Coroner’s Courts until 1983.
The prisoner’s exercise and gallows are a grim reminder of capital punishment which was legally abolished in Tasmania in 1968.
The Night Performances at the gaol are generally held on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings are a theatrical interpretation of the building and its famous inmates. Recommended for mature audiences
