Severe example of synagogue in neo-Egyptian style, this building is the second oldest synagogue in Australia. The structure is a rare architectural form in Tasmania (there is one other in Hobart) and although of Colonial materials, methods and basic form, does not appear to relate to many other buildings or the Tasmanian ethic.
A small square Georgian chapel in the Egyptian Revival style. The plain, painted brick facade has a slightly projecting central panel of trapezoidal shape which extends up through the parapet. The front facade has simple brick cornices and string course. The windows are trapezoidal in shape and lead glazed in the front facade. The front fence is also designed to complement the building.
