St. Matthews Church Restoration Appeal

Aims:
Appeal established in 1987 for the conservation and maintenance of St. Matthews Church, Rokeby.
Address: King Street, Rokeby
Heritage Significance:

St Matthews Church designed by convict architect Blackburn. It is his first major work in the Gothic style. Built in 1840-41, construction is finely detailed edifice within a small isolated community both represent significant creative and technical achievements. represents one of the earliest attempts to create an architecturally correct church in the Victorian Academic Gothic style.
In the churchyard lies the tombstone of Rev. Robert Knopwood, who died September 18, 1838. Knopwood was the first colonial chaplain in Van Dieman’s Land having arrived in 1804.
